If you do have periodontal disease, we can typically take care of it through scaling and root planing. The first step will be scaling the tooth, which involves removing the plaque and tartar sitting below the gum line. The dentist will then smooth the root surfaces (planing) to give the gum a chance to heal.
If the condition is too advanced, periodontal surgery may be necessary. This involves making small incisions along the gum line so the gum can be lifted back. We’ll then be able to get a better look at the area so we can completely clean it. The gum will be stitched in place again when the treatment is complete.
