Dos and Don’ts After a Professional Teeth Whitening

October 02, 2024

If you recently had your teeth whitened with a cosmetic dentist in Pembroke Pines, you probably want your shining smile to last. You should avoid doing certain things the first 24 hours after your treatment, as they can affect its results and even damage your tooth enamel, causing sensitivity and pain.

Here is what you should and shouldn’t do to prevent possible damage and ensure the longevity and effectiveness of your teeth whitening treatment.

What You Need to Know About Teeth Whitening

Don’ts After a Teeth Whitening

#1 Don’t Eat Staining Foods

Teeth stains are caused by substances found in certain foods, such as tannins, acids, and chromogens. These are primarily present in foods that are colored, such as dark chocolate, red meat, and curries.

For this reason, any deeply colored food, even natural ones, should be completely avoided during the first 48 hours following the procedure.

#2 Don’t Use Colored Dental Products

The color restriction doesn’t apply only to food—everything you put into your mouth should be white or colorless. Nowadays, colored dental products such as toothpaste and mouthwash are more common. However, they should be avoided for 48 hours following your teeth whitening procedure.

#3 Don’t Eat Acidic Food

Acidic food is also a no-go after teeth whitening. Pickles, soda, and citrus fruits are foods and drinks high in acid, which can further erode your dental enamel and increase sensitivity. Besides the discomfort, this also causes staining.

#4 Don’t Drink Hot or Cold Beverages

It is best to drink tepid or room-temperature water after teeth whitening treatment because your teeth will be more sensitive. Stay away from hot or cold beverages for at least 24 hours.

Dos After a Teeth Whitening Procedure

#1 Do Rinse Your Mouth Often

You may resume eating your favorite foods, including ones with rich colors, 48 hours after your teeth whitening treatment, but this does not completely shield your teeth from stains.

You can rinse your mouth with water to lessen the likelihood of teeth staining after a colorful meal. This will not give tannins, acids, and chromogens the time they need to leave dark spots.

#2 Do Drink with a Straw

Using a straw when drinking is a long-term habit that helps prevent drinks like soda and coffee from discoloring teeth. Straws help lower the chance of discoloration by minimizing how long your teeth are exposed to the liquid.

We recommend buying a reusable straw. This way, you can practice this habit wherever you are while reducing waste and protecting the environment.

#3 Do Avoid Smoking

Smoking is one habit that can quickly cause staining and leave your teeth with a yellow tint. If you would like to maintain white teeth, avoid smoking not only the first 24 hours after treatment but also in the long run.

#4 Do Use Remineralizing Gel or Mouthwash

We recommend adding a remineralizing gel or mouthwash to your daily oral hygiene routine to keep your teeth looking their best after a whitening treatment while protecting and strengthening them. Remineralizing gels are an excellent product to use because they help restore the minerals in your teeth and keep them from getting discolored or yellowed again.
